Perioada interbelica ma fascina inca dinainte sa apara pe marile ecrane The Great Gatsby, filmul care ne-a oferit sansa sa aruncam o privire asupra aristocratiei din acea vreme, conflictelor care se creau intr-o atmosfera tumultuoasa si, desigur, tinutelor extravagante care luau nastere printre invidii, certuri si triunghiuri amoroase.

Nu stiu daca vremurile respective imi plac atat de mult incat sa-mi doresc sa ma teleportez acolo. Tot ce pot sa-ti spun este ca admir anumite parti ale stilului de viata ilustrat de Marele Gatsby si, da, aceste particele le-as „transfera” cu placere in viata mea de astazi.

Imi place cum viata personajelor pare studiata. Chiar si accidental, ele (personajele) sunt la patru ace si stiu sa-si imbrace (la propriu) identitatea, dand dovada de constanta si perseverenta. Nu stiu daca acelasi lucru se va putea spune si despre noi, peste cateva decenii. Oare jeansii si bluzele pe care le aruncam pe noi cu nonsalanta, agitati fiind intre mai multe intalniri, vor forma in vizualul public un stil vestimentar peste cativa ani? Nu sunt sigura. Cred ca vestimentatia interbelica prezinta avantajul de a se infiltra mult mai usor in mintea privitorului. Ea ramane acolo.

Am senzatia ca nici dialogurile migaloase nu se datoreaza doar talentului actorilor, scenaristilor si regizorilor. In acea vreme, vocabularul abunda in sofisticare si replica, fara a parea fortat. Astazi, cuvintele par mai sarace, iar pretul lor a devenit mult mai mic. Si socializarea si iubirea au capatat alte dimensiuni. Zic si eu, poate ne-am indragosti altfel daca Gatsby ar da in fiecare seara o petrecere la noi in cartier.

The interbellum has been fascinating me way before The Great Gatsby was launched on the big screen. However, this movie gave us the chance to take a glimpse into the aristocratic world of the time, when conflicts gave birth to a riotous atmosphere and an extravagant dresscode. All these, plus romantic love triangles, envy and conflicting feelings. 

If I could teleport myself into that world, I don’t know if I would do it. All I can say is that I admire certain parts of the lifestyle that The Great Gatsby describes. But not all of them.

I love the way the life of the characters seems planned in detail. Even if accidentally, they always know how to dress their identities. I’m not sure whether the same thing can be said about us today. A few decades later, I feel that we dress with nonchalance, almost forgetting to express our internal characters through clothes. I’m not talking about celebrities or supermodels, but of everyday people who dress and don’t express too much. I’m curious if the clothes we wear today will be powerful enough to create a homogenous style that will function as a trademark for our descendants. What do you think? Maybe this is the ‘unique selling proposition’ of the Gatsby style – the fact that it very easily imprints in our minds. It just stays there. 

Even the dialogues are more vivid and studied than those specific to our lives. The vocabulary is richer and the words more powerful. Today, we have almost forgotten that even colloquial talk can be transformed into art. Love and socializing have different meanings today as well. I don’t know, maybe the way we fall in love would be different if we lived in Gatsby’s time …
