Today, stripes are an important element of fashion, no matter if we refer to the zebra-model, the cross-walk or the barcode. But that hasn’t been always like that. In Medieval times, stripes were considered evil and that is why only members of certain social categories were allowed to wear them (clowns, prisoners etc.). A French cobbler was sent to death only because he dared to wear stripes!
Today, things are radically different. Actually, stripes became popular sometime at the end of the 18th century. In 1846 Queen Victoria dressed her little son, Albert Edward, in a striped suit to board the Royal Yacht. Ever since the public fell in love with kids wearing stripes.
We are now at the beginning of the 20th century, when Coco Chanel took a trip to the French Riviera. After seeing the navy and white striped shirts of the workers in the marina, she became passionate about the style and fascinated about the minimalism of stripes. She wanted to take the stripes mainstream and that is why she soon started selling them at her Deauville shop in 1917.
There were also other personalities who took care of the fame of stripes: Audrey Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe, Brigitte Bardot and the list goes on …
And today, in 2014, in a beautiful day of spring, Emil Costrut and I have also tried to transform stripes into a piece of art. What do you think of our latest photo shoot?
